Children like to have a routine.  When they have a routine they know what to expect.  Routine is important at home and in the classroom. When there is a routine kids know what to expect.  The summer Chinese Language Activity Calendar is a guide for you, as a parent or an educator.

For young children, a routine will help them to know what is coming up next.  When my kids were little they knew shower time was the time that we sang the Chinese “Shower Time is Happy Time” song.  It was the time their rubber duck friends were out in the water and we did the counting forward and backward.  For my students, they know when I sing the “Ni Hao” song it is time for them to pay attention and get ready for the playful Chinese class.  When I sing the “clean up” song they will pick up their toys and supplies back to their baskets.

As a parent and a teacher, you’ll have a predictable target language schedule for your days with your children.

The activities I have included in The Chinese Language Activity Calendar for summer can be done with very little preparation.  You can incorporate your focused Chinese expressions, Chinese characters, Songs, Rhymes, stories in this calendar. The only requirement is to keep the experience FUN and PLAYFUL, and not overwhelming for kids.

You can set up a Chinese routine for your kids with actionable steps.

  1. Set up a block time of the day as the Chinese Play Time.

  2. Have a designated area in the house for daily Chinese Play Time.

  3. Focus on your weekly goal with a visual display for you.

  4. Engage your kids in the setup process., such as ask them where you should set up a Chinese word wall or post the activity calendar.

  5. Apply your weekly goal to these hands-on activities in the calendar to engage kids in the concepts of math, science, literacy, culture and geography.

  6. Make songs, rhymes, and movement a part of the daily Chinese routine.

  7. Plan walks and field trips regularly.

  8. Inviting family friends or relatives to join your children for the Chinese Play Time every month.
