Winter Olympic Games 2022 is happening in Beijing, China. This makes Beijing the first city in the world to host both the Summer Olympics (2008) and Winter Olympics (2022).   • When people talk about the Olympics they often refer to the Summer “Olympics” 奧林匹克運動會 Ào lín pǐ kè yùn dòng huì 奥林匹克运动会.

  •  Olympics include both Summer and “Winter Olympics” 冬季奧林匹克運動會 dōng jì ào lín pǐ kè yùn dòng huì 冬季奥林匹克运动会.

  •  The first Winter Olympics began in France in 1924.

  • Winter Olympics have been hosted on three continents so far – America, Europe, and Asia.

  • Do you know why Winter Olympic Games have never been held in a country in the South Hemisphere?

  • There are TWO Mascots 吉祥物 Jíxiáng wù (literally means lucky animal/object) for Beijing Winter Olympic Games. The one for the Olympic Games is the pudgy panda, Bing DwenDwen 冰墩墩 (pinyin: bīng dūn dūn).

 

 

  • The Mascots for the 2022 Paralympic Games is a Chinese Lantern child, Shuey RhonRhon 雪容融 (pinyin: xuě róng róng).

 

 

  • The mascot design of Bing DwenDwen was picked from over 5,000 submissions from China and 35 countries in a global contest. It is not surprising that the final decision on the panda design. After all, the giant panda is the national animal of China. You may know that panda was also one of the five Fuwa mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

  • Design of the Beijing 2022 Olympic “Medals” 獎牌 jiǎng pái 奖牌 has the traditional jade pendant style.  The name for this set of medals is Together As One – Tóng Xīn – 同心 – it literally means “same heart.”  See the video below, the design has five rings and a center. The five rings indicate the Olympic spirit and it brings people together from around the world.
