Chinese animation films for kids is featuring 10+ Chinese animations that children and families will enjoy.  This list of movies serves the purpose of exploring the Chinese language and culture. The animation style of each film is different from one country to another.  A great story in an animation film keeps the children’s attention.  The music in a movie can be very enchanting.  From the story of an animation movie, children learn about the culture of a country.  It can be just a small aspect of culture but it can be expanded with great teachable moments.

Chinese animation films for kids can also elevate Chinese language learning is a fun and engaging way.  Pay attention to the top five things in animation when you use films at home or in the classroom as a teaching resource.

Over the Moon (Netflix, 2020)

As Fei Fei builds a rocket to the moon and seeks the existence of the moon fairy in Chinese culture the film shares a musical fantasy with cultural content linked to the legend of the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival, a.k.a The Moon Festival. You will see the Moon Fairy, the Jade Rabbit, and the Moon Cakes in the story and it expands from there. This title has audio tracks in Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and, English. Subtitles include Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

 

 

 

The Last Train (Taiwan 2018)

What is about the last train? Why is it important for the station master today? It’s the last day to work, station master, Chen sent out the last train. Looking around the place he worked for his entire life. He realized the reason he chooses to stay, he’s waiting for himself that missed that train 10 years ago.

 

Barkley The Cat (Taiwan, 2011)

“Barkley” is produced by Studio2 Animation Lab and directed by Chiu Li-Wei.  The story started as an exploration of a boy and his friend in southern Taiwan and then turned into a discovery of learning about themselves on the journey.  “Barkley” has won international recognition for Best Animation at Amsterdam Film Festival, Best Animation Feature Film at San Diego International Kids’ Film Festival, and Best Animation Feature at the Golden Horse Awards.

 

Go Go Giwas (Taiwan, 2016)

“Go Go Giwas” is an educational animation produced in Taiwan.  Giwas is a popular name in Ataya tribe.  In this animation, Giwas and her friends are learning tradition wisdom and science from day-t0-day adventures.  This Chinese animation encourages girls around the word to enjoy STEM.  It touches ancient science, geology, the lotus effect, pigmentation, light refraction, structural mechanics and more.  “Go Go Giwas” has been screed at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, the Korean Bucheon International Animation Festival and has received the Best Animation Golden Bell award.


Big Fish & Begonia (China, 2018)

“Big Fish & Begonia” is produced by Enlight Pictures in China and is directed by Xuan Liang and Chun Zhang.  It will be released in the United States and U. K. in 2018.  “Big Fish & Begonia” is inspired by Zhuang Zi 莊子, a Chinese classic and it has also blended in other Chinese classic stories such as Mountain and Seas山海經, and In Search of the Supernatural 搜神記.

The story goes with a mysterious girl who turned into a dolphin and discovered the world along the way.  “Our dream is to make a heart-touching animation film, which will bring teenagers power of love and faith.” said the producers.  “Big Fish & Begonia” had a successful theatrical release in China in 2016 and had an 89 million box office.  It also stands as one of the top box office Chinese animated movies of all time and premiered in the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, France.

 


Little Door Gods (China, 2017)

“Little Door Gods”小門神|小门神 is a comedy animation produced by Light Chaser Animation Studio in China.  This film has an interesting storyline. People no longer believe in the guardians and these gods are facing a crisis with the jobs.  “Little Door Gods” premiered its English edition on Netflix in 2017.

 

Uproar in Heaven (China, 1964)

“Uproar in Heaven” is produced in China in 1964 and is based on the Chinese classic story, Journey to the West.  The story started with the mischievous Monkey King and his encounters with deities in Heaven.  This animation has a DVD release with English subtitle.

 



Monkey King: Hero is Back [Chinese edition] 西遊記之大聖歸來| 西游记之大圣归来

Monkey King is let out by a kid to save his town from monsters after spending 500 years in an ice cage!  This is a new animated film released in 2015.  It is directed by first time director Tian Xiaopeng.  The movie is an adaptation of the novel “Journey to the West” 西遊記|西游记 by Wu Cheng’En 吳承恩.  Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels in Chinese literature.  It is published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty.

 

 

 

 


 

Peppa Celebrates Chinese New Year 小豬佩琪過大年 | 小猪佩奇过大年

The young learners will enjoy seeing how Peppa Pig celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year and learn about the traditions of this major Chinese festival!  Experience the Mandarin edition and see your child’s reaction.

 




Abominable | 雪人奇缘  (PG)

Yi, a teen discovers a furry cute Yeti on the rooftop of her Shanghai apartment building.  From there, Yi and her two friends embark on an epic quest to reunite the creature with his family in the Himalayas.  However, it is not an easy task.  They need to dodge the Yeti’s former captors a zoologist and an investor.

This film also highlights the beautiful landmarks of China from the Gobi Desert to the Leshan Giant Buddha, the tallest Buddha in the world which is carved out of rock in Sichuan.  You will also see the canola fields and the Yellow Mountains which have thousands of stairways.  The journey to the Himalayas starts from Shanghai and this film embeds a travelogue of China in the adventure.

 

Monkey King: Hero Is Back  西遊記之大聖歸來|西游记之大圣归来  (PG)

By now, you know that Monkey King is a story that can be told in many ways and Chinese people love it.  Here is a new animation film of the Chinese classic.  What is the naughty witty Monkey King journey this time?  I think your whole family will enjoy it.

 

 

The Legend of Hei 羅小黑戰記 | 罗小黑战记  (teen and up)

This is a film based on popular online series, The Legend of Luo Xiaohei.  This fantasy story developed around Xiao Hei, the Cat and the person who found her was a blockbuster in China. Xiao Hei cat is not an ordinary kitty and the adventure starts when its owner take Xiaohei to the countryside to visit grandpa.  It has funny and heartwarming storylines coordinate with the web series.

 


 

BAO

Bao is directed by Domee Shi, a filmmaker of Disney Pixar.  Shi has a Chinese heritage and her Chinese mother is the consultant of the film to give instruction and the making of the beautiful buns.  This short film won the Oscar’s best Animated Short Film. It’s a touching and heartwarming movie with the storyline of a little bun comes to life in a steamer and the loving mother sees him grow from a lovely chubby baby to adulthood.  It is the story of a child.  It is also a reflection of the journey of a parent.

From Momotaro to Gingerbread man you’ve seen fables and stories finding babies in food like a big peach in the well-known Japanese story, Momotaro.
