You’d better catch them as fast as you can.   “Mandarin Madness” is a Chinese learning app developed by Native Tongue.  The design of this app incorporates the learning of basic Chinese characters and phrases into an exciting game.  This app is an entertaining learning tool for children and new adult Chinese learners.

What children can learn

1. Vocabulary building

There are eleven categories and each includes eleven to twelve vocabulary. It is a tool to learn basic words in Chinese.

2. Chinese character recognition

The game starts with one vocabulary card and one picture. Gradually it increases to 4 pictures to choose from. The repetition of the vocabulary card helps learners to recognize the characters.

3. Pronunciation

This app has good and clear Mandarin Chinese pronunciation.

4. Total immersion approach

There is no English translation or Pin Yin in the app and the total immersion approach makes the user focus on the target language – both spoken and written.

5. Fun learning factor

My 7-year-old said “This is fun and I need to focus because the tiles are falling down faster and faster!!”

The category with Chinese culture vocabulary such as “red envelopes”, “panda” and “Chinese lanterns” is really good and could be used for a cultural class.

How It Could Be Made Even Better

It would be helpful to have an English translation option in the settings for users who need assistance.

Where to find this Educational App

  1. Thanks for the review!

Our thinking is to use immersion as much as possible (without translation). We will take that feedback on board re English translation.
