Multicultural Children’s Book Day: January 27th, 2016 #ReadYourWorld

January 27th is Multicultural Children’s Book Day.  The co-creators of Multicultural Children’s Book Day are Mia from PragmaticMom and Valarie from JumpIntoABook.  I (Miss Panda) am delighted to be a part of this wonderful event and help to bring brilliant, diverse books to more homes, classrooms, libraries, and schools.  This year teachers can also join the Classroom Reading Challenge!

Today I am sharing the Multicultural Book Series – “Real Street Kidz” by Quentin Holmes.  (Type: Chapter books.  Reading Level: Ages 10 and up.)

Book Review: Multicultural Book Series - Real Street Kidz

Book Review: Multicultural Book Series – Real Street Kidz

Quotes from “Chasing Action”:

“…Because you’re letting everyone else tell you Lucky’s a nerd.  You’ve never talked to him, so you don’t know.”

Chase looked like he was going to say something, but Q was on a roll.  “And even if he is a nerd, who cares?

He’s rolling with me now, and I think he’s cool…”

(Real Street Kidz)

Meet your first friends on Real Street!  Jason is known as “Lucky.”  Lucky is a Chinese-American child who is considered to be a nerd by his peers.  Quincy likes to go by “Q.”  He is an African-American kid who recently moved to the Real Street neighborhood.  Chase is a Caucasian-American boy who is enthusiastic about skateboarding.  Carlos is known as “Los,” and he is a Mexican-American kid who is mechanical genius.  You will also get to know Jazz, Ginger, and Kawena.  Quentin Holmes, author of this multicultural book series, takes his readers on an adventure and friendship-building journey with his stories of the Real Street neighborhood kids.  Children will ride the community skate park project with Q, Lucky, Los, and Chase in the first book, “Chasing Action.”  Kids will join the team with Jazz and her friends to give a helping hand to a failing design artist’s business in the second book, “Art of Authenticity.”  In the third book, “Good Ideas,” readers will see how the Real Street kids face their challenges at school.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is easy to say but not always easy to follow, especially when older children encounter peer pressure at school.  How do the Real Street kids stay true to themselves and remain open to peers whom they never really get to know intimately?  How do they make their community better and make a difference?  How do they handle challenges and changes in life and at school?  Children from different cultural and family backgrounds in this series jump out of the stereotypes and embrace the differences in each other.  Quentin Holmes successfully delivers an important message in this series – “be understanding, be respectful, and work together to make a positive difference in your community!”  Kids ages 10 and above will enjoy these three easy-to-read,  action-filled chapter books.

Quentin Homes is a writer, an entrepreneur, and a brand creator.  Quentin empowers young world citizens through literature for kids!

Mission

The MCCBD team’s mission to spread the word and raise awareness about the importance of diversity in children’s literature. Our young readers need to see themselves within the pages of a book and experience other cultures, languages, traditions and religions within the pages of a book. We encourage readers, parents, teachers, caregivers and librarians to follow along the fun book reviews, author visits, event details, a multicultural children’s book linky and via our hashtag (#ReadYourWorld) on Twitter and other social media.  The co-creators of this unique event are Mia Wenjen from Pragmatic Mom and Valarie Budayr from Jump Into a Book/Audrey Press. You can find a bio for Mia and Valarie here.
